Coetzee film review

By the way, I recently watched again Eric Rohmer’s adaptation of Kleist’s Marquise von O. I see the film as a tribute on the part of civilisation – Rohmer had so civilised a sensibility that I am surprised he made any headway in the film world – to the mystery of genius.

Poppy Fields

I always thought it was sad, that story – when he was in Hastings, The Wizard of Oz was showing locally and he wanted to go and see it because of the name, but the landlady said, “Oh, you wouldn’t like it, it’s a children’s film”. I think he would have loved it.

Ending


The Turin Horse (Bela Tarr, 2011). On a third viewing, it feels less connected to historical specifics (the Nietzsche anecdote that supplies the title), and is more loosely about the end of everything, including cinema.
